An product that costs the state €12 bn annually, needs a whole of gov response. Clear need for a dedicated Office for Alcohol Harm Reduction. @DonnellyStephen @ColmBurkeTD @davidcullinane @RoisinShortall @DuncanSmithTD

Very powerful piece highlighting some of the painful issues from parental problem alcohol use. 1 million adults in Ireland living with the legacy of this trauma.
A sea change is needed across gov to fully address the issues from parental problem alcohol use.

@IrelandSilent One common sense recommendation is introduction of @operationencomp prog which allows for data sharing between police & schools in incidents of domestic abuse, often fuelled by alcohol. Working successfully across UK & NI. @HMcEntee @ISPCCChildline

Equally concerning to see current Taoiseach and former health minister @SimonHarrisTD lauding Diageo and that the gov is investing in a product which costs Ireland billions every year and incalculable pain to families.

'I think of many of the alcohol companies with their 0.0-type advertising. We can anticipate attempts to bypass by companies in the gambling industry, so we are going to include measures to prevent them.'

More than time for gov to address the 'cynical' zero alcohol product marketing using identical branding to master brand in areas restricted for alcohol advertising.

Here is my article published in the 3 @DublinPeople newspapers this week - The Northside People East / West and Southside People - talking to @SheilaGilheany from Alcohol Action Ireland about their call to ban alcohol sponsorship of sports.

When your product kills your best customers every year, you need to keep recruiting new ones. #BigAlcohol has children & young people in it's sights. 🎯 We need #AlcoholMarketing restrictions to protect people, especially children & young people. #AlcoholFreeKids
Excellent contribution from @SheilaGilheany about the marketing of alcohol - which is no ordinary product. We need to start seeing alcohol for what it is - a psychoactive substance, and treat it accordingly. Tobacco products would not be promoted on live TV in same way.
Interesting to see further restrictions on sale of alcohol in Balearic Islands. Lessons for Ireland re proposed increases in licensing hours in #SaleofAlcoholBill. More alcohol consumed likely to lead to more alcohol harms.

What we're working on now
Highlighting the harm caused by problem alcohol use in the home and its impact across the lifespan.
There are significant concerns about aspects of the Sale of Alcohol Bill which are likely to lead to increased alcohol harm.
Ireland’s Public Health Alcohol Act is based on WHO ‘best buys’ of price, promotion & availability to tackle alcohol harm.
Harnessesing the lived experience of people in recovery from alcohol to drive policy change.
You are not alone...
Shared Voices aims to provide a platform for those who have lived with the trauma of parental problem alcohol use; give voice to their experience, so that others too can know that they are not alone.
