The results of a new survey, Alcohol: Public knowledge, attitudes and behaviour,1 show a strong belief among 1,020 survey respondents (85%) that the current level of alcohol consumption in Ireland is too high, and a general perception (73%) that Irish society tolerates high levels of alcohol consumption. The survey was commissioned by the Health Research Board and done by Ipsos MRBI.

Report of the Strategic Response Group – ‘A better city for all’

The Strategic Response Group (SRG) is a partnership set up to address public substance misuse and perceived anti-social behaviour in Dublin city centre. In June 2012, following a year-long process of research and consultation, it published a report aimed at addressing this issue in the long term.1 The report was officially launched by the lord mayor of Dublin, Councillor Andrew Montague, in one of his last engagements as mayor. The issue of anti-social behaviour related to substance misuse in Dublin city centre has long been a focus of media attention and public concern.

Unmet needs and benzodiazepine misuse among people in treatment

Many problem opiate users in treatment also misuse other substances. This presents a challenge to addiction services as often one single service cannot address the complex needs of such clients. A study carried out in the Drug Treatment Centre Board examined clients’ perceptions of unmet needs and the association between misuse of non-prescribed benzodiazepines and extent of unmet needs.1

Deaths among children and young people in state care, after care or known to the HSE

In June 2012 the report of the Independent Child Death Review Group (ICDRG) was published.1 The review group investigated the deaths (between 1 January 2000 and 30 April 2010) of 196 children and young people who were in care, in receipt of aftercare or known to the child protection services in Ireland at the time of their death.
