2020: A year when the Covid-19 pandemic caused a reassessment of our lives. A year when Dublin Simon Community was at the frontline of this healthcare crisis, showing dedication and creativity in weathering this most difficult storm. Despite the challenges of the year and together with the support of our donors, funders, staff and volunteers we helped more than 7,600 individuals across our services in Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan.

Mental and physical healthcare, addiction treatment, recovery and aftercare continue to be a massive area of need for those experiencing homelessness. Our treatment service delivery grew to meet this need, working with 23% more people than the previous year. 938 people accessed Dublin Simon medical residential treatment, detox, recovery and aftercare services.

P.14 Health services and addiction treatment:
We continued to provide addiction recovery and blood borne virus (BBV) services despite the Covid-19 pandemic but there was a partial suspension of the residential alcohol and benzodiazepines detox service between March and June. The ratio of male to female using our residential detox services is 6:1 and almost three quarters of those are aged between 35 and 54. 50% of clients who accessed the service have been homeless for five years or more. Additional to the residential service, non-residential addiction-specific in-reach homeless action team and Aftercare services continued throughout the pandemic.

In 2020 568 clients participated in client development activities. Through availing of this service clients can develop skills, interests, motivation, self-esteem, confidence and social networks while also increasing their employability. The Health & Wellbeing service aims to address some of the risk factors associated with poor health in the homeless community. The service is open to clients from across Dublin Simon Community and to those accessing homeless and addiction centres across Dublin city.
