This publication documents the findings to emerge from a qualitative study that examined the experiences of long-term clients of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area of South Dublin. The research was conducted against a backdrop of clear evidence throughout Europe, including in Ireland, of an ageing drug treatment population. Internationally, recognition of the health and social needs of individuals who are long-term participants in drug treatment is growing but research is only beginning to examine the complexities of being an older person who has been using drugs and/or accessing treatment for a prolonged period. This is the first study in the Irish context to specifically address the experiences of individuals who are long-term clients of MMT.
